This was the ultimate result of a "master copy" project I did.

Mark Rothko is one of my favorite painters -- his use of color as a form of emotional expression (*ahem, color field painting's entire premise*) is delightful. Needless to say, however, I appreciate it even more after reproducing the painting -- which was more difficult to produce than one would think.

My mum refuses to hang the painting in our house, though, and that's sad...

Fantastic! I've just recently picked up on Rothko as part of a Creative Process unit I'm doing for an Art & Design class, and he's the first abstract artist that I've "understood" in a way.

To see his work so wonderfully emulated is amazing ^^

nice, it really looks like his work.

I have a hard time feeling the colors though.
Probably because of the square format. I'm trying it circular at the moment, and that really works for me.

I wouldn't want it hung up in my house either, not cuz I don't like Mark Rothko but because his paintings really have a deep effect on me. So just looking at some of his reproductions make me feel whatever it's trying to convey...and I seriously feel anxious looking at this...I like his happy, earlier works =] like that aqua blue one? Amazing...

I think this project is not bad at all. Originality in an artist doesn't come from finding something new in every aspect of your art. That's just going overboard. Originality comes from mastering what has already been done, and feeling free to follow your own impulses after you have mastered it.

I think this copy of yours is done very well. Give me you mum's phone number; I'll talk to her. :blahblah:

So you had to copy a piece of visual art for a class? That shouldn't be allowed, especially with Rothko's work...

Well, it's part of my college's painting curriculum. It is to make young painters take the "old masters" and their techniques into account, thereby introducing the student to methods of painting that they may not have thought to use on their own. I am a realistic painter, so my professor suggested that I move to the opposite end of the spectrum for this painting. Rothko's one of my favorites, so I decided to put myself -- as a painter -- into his painting processes.

Why is Rothko less worthy than other painters of being emulated? Emulation is the highest form of flattery.
